NEW CURATOR JOINS CLOCK MUSEUM

COLUMBIA, PA: The National Watch and Clock Museum recently hired a new Curator of Collections to continue the legacy of Carter Harris, who retired from the Museum in August. Kim Jovinelli joined the Museum December 1 and will be responsible for the professional preservation, documentation, security, and presentation of the Museum collection. These tasks are not completed alone; other staff and knowledgeable members and volunteers will assist, and Carter Harris has generously offered his support in working with Kim in this transition.

Kim received her undergraduate degree in Archaeology from Millersville University and a graduate degree from The University of the Arts with a concentration in Collections Care and Management. She was the assistant curator for the Delaware County Historical Society and a volunteer with Independence National Historic Park’s National Park Service Archaeology and Collections Care and Management Department. Her experience gave her curatorial exposure to mechanical and technological collections and their proper care and exhibition. Kim was awarded The University of the Arts Museum Communication Award for Service to the Museum Field for the creation of a practical guide to collections management for board members of small and medium-sized historical societies. In addition to Kim’s curatorial education and experience, she brings an extensive knowledge of software products essential to the proper care, preservation, and presentation of museum collections.

“Kim will be making improvements to the Museum's collection management practices, including documentation, security, and access to the collection. I am excited to have someone as passionate about her profession as Kim joining our staff. She will bring a fresh perspective to our collection and our story,” states Museum Director Noel Poirier.

In response to her new position, Kim shares, “I am very excited to be working with the National Watch and Clock Museum! History is my passion, and preserving it is important to me. The history stored at the Museum is an amazing amalgam of old and new, which is going to make for an amazing experience. After all, what is history but the passage of time?”

FROZEN IN TIME

COLUMBIA, PA: “Do you want to build a snowman” – clock? Make a snowman that won’t melt!

On January 24 the National Watch and Clock Museum will hold three workshops at 10 a.m., noon, or 2 p.m. for snowman lovers to come and make their own snowman clock. Workshops will include making a snowman clock, enjoying cookies and hot chocolate, and touring the Museum. The cost is $15 per child (ages 4 and up) and $8 for adults ($7 for seniors).

“The Museum is always thrilled to bring in visitors for events like this one. Traditionally, we’ve offered clock-making workshops using recycled CDs, dinner plates, and even flip-flops. Now in the doldrums of winter, Frozen in Time offers families a chance to break the cabin fever, share in something creative, and learn a little bit about time –something we’re especially fond of,” shares Marketing and Special Events Coordinator Kim Craven.

Please call 717-684-8261, ext. 211 for reservations. Seating is limited for each session.

ONLINE EDUCATION: AMERICAN TIME-ONLY MOVEMENT

COLUMBIA, PA: A new online course is available! Learn about time—when and where you want! Get the same level of technical content and standard of instruction as face-to-face courses but without travel time and substantial cost.

Log on to NAWCC’s website and into your member account 24/7 to access My NAWCC Online Courses. Take a course when it is convenient for you, at a pace that works for you, with the option to stop and restart the program.

American Time-Only Movement is the second online course to be developed and available to NAWCC members. Instructor Michael Dempsey introduces the student to the basic procedures covering the eight-day, time-only clock movement with an open mainspring typically found in “American” clocks. The course concentrates on the procedures needed in this course and for other online-based workshops. Students will learn the following repair procedures: movement and mainspring cleaning, hand bushing, pivot polishing, and time train troubleshooting. These core procedures will be covered in-depth in future classes.

The viewing fee for member is $45 ($75 for non-members), and access to this course is available for six months after purchase. Handout materials can easily be downloaded. Please review our Policies and Online Learning System Requirements before registering.

“We’re excited to see this program developed because it truly expands the reach of the NAWCC, literally opening the field of horology to the world and offering learning to those who might not be able to attend our workshops in person,” explains Director of Education Katie Knaub.

“We are embarking on a new frontier in global education for the NAWCC. It’s so important that we preserve and share the knowledge of time for future generations by becoming leaders in education, not only for members but for anyone who wants to learn. It is my hope that we all continue to learn and share in this vision,” states Dempsey.

Education is the core of NAWCC’s mission, so enjoy learning!

SANTA SETS HIS WATCH AT TIME MUSEUM

COLUMBIA, PA: No one needs to watch his time more that Santa does! With the days ticking down to that big night of traveling to all the homes he must visit, Santa knows the importance of time. There’s no better place to synchronize his watch than at the center of time - the National Watch and Clock Museum.

After he arrives at the Museum on Saturday, December 13, and sets his magical watch, children may visit with Santa Claus from 11:30 am to 1:00 pm and share with him their holiday wishes. Parents are welcomed to take pictures and enjoy yuletide music and punch and cookies around the Christmas tree.

“I was always convinced, even as a child, that Santa was able to manipulate time somehow in order to deliver all of those Christmas gifts,” states Museum Director Noel Poirier. “It’s only natural that Santa would want to come to the only national museum dedicated to the story and technology of time and timekeeping.”

GERHART HONORED FOR HIS TIME AT THE WATCH AND CLOCK MUSEUM

COLUMBIA, PA: Volunteers are the lifeblood of the National Association of Watch & Clock Collectors’ (NAWCC) Watch & Clock Museum and the Library & Research Center. In 2013 more than 50 dedicated volunteers gave nearly 6,000 documented hours—a huge savings for the Association.

The NAWCC named Marietta resident Gregory Gerhart Volunteer of the Year. Recently, Greg received an award for his generous contribution of time.

Greg’s uncle, a member of the NAWCC, introduced him to the Association more than 40 years ago. Gerhart has been a member for many years, and after he retired from the Kellogg Company, he decided to pursue his interest in the NAWCC by volunteering at the Museum. He regularly enjoys greeting worldwide members and visitors, guiding group tours, and taking on various Museum gallery projects. Greg’s positive experience now includes serving as a part-time gallery attendant.

“Greg took it upon himself to make improvements in the Museum’s lighting by using his technical experience in rebuilding the Museum’s display case lighting units. With funds from a donor and support from the units’ manufacturer, Greg was able to singlehandedly improve the experience of our Museum visitors by ensuring that the objects on display are adequately lighted. It simply wouldn’t have been possible without him,” shares Museum Director Noel Poirier.

Volunteers are integral to the National Watch & Clock Museum. These dedicated individuals provide much of the manpower needed for daily operations, programs, special projects, and events. From event planning to education aides to exhibit construction, to archival research, volunteers get involved at various levels that fit the individuals’ time and commitment availability. If you have extra time on your hands and are interested in volunteering, please call the volunteer coordinator at (717) 684-8261, ext. 237 to request an application. The application is also available on the Museum’s website at www.museumoftime.org.

HIDDEN TREASURES REVEALED

COLUMBIA, PA: The National Watch & Clock Museum has amassed its collection of more than 12,000 objects over the course of 40 plus years. The Museum’s exhibit spaces and themed galleries allow for the regular exhibition of only a third or so of the total collection. Most of the Museum collection is kept in secure storage, and exhibited occasionally as part of a special exhibit or maintained as a study object for scholars and horologists.

A number of objects in the collection may not fit neatly into the broader story told by the Museum, but are, nonetheless, aesthetically pleasing, horologically interesting, or in some cases, odd. This exhibit pulls the curtain back on some of the objects that rarely are seen or appreciated because they are in storage most of the time.

“The Museum asked staff, volunteers, and interns to explore the collection and identify objects that they thought deserved to be enjoyed by, or shared with, our Museum visitors. This exhibit is the result of that effort to highlight our Backroom Curiosities. We hope you enjoy seeing these objects as much as we did selecting them!” shares Museum Director Noel Poirier.

Backroom Curiosities will be on display through April 2015.

HOPS ‘n’ CLOCKS
With more beer and food than ever before!

COLUMBIA, PA: It’s time again to sip on some hops and check out the clocks! The National Watch and Clock Museum is holding its seventh annual beer-tasting event, Hops ’n’ Clocks, on Friday, July 11, from 6 to 9 p.m. Come sample local brews and fine food from the area, enjoy live music, and maybe even walk away with a door prize!

Six new breweries are joining the fun this year: J & J Miracle Mead, Zuckfoltzfus Brewing Co., Baldy Beard Brewing Co., Gunpowder Falls Brewing, Columbia Kettle Works, and Wyndridge Farm with its crafty hard cider. Returning breweries include Lancaster Brewing, Liquid Hero Brewery, Troegs Brewing, and Appalachian Brewing Company. And what’s beer without something to go with it? Providing tasty samples to complement the beer will be six new caterers to Hops ‘n’ Clocks: Union Station Grill, Half Nuts Popcorn, Hinkle’s, the Original Pickle Co., Center Square Bakery, and Baum’s Bologna. Those returning include Isaac’s Restaurant and Deli, Prudhomme’s Lost Cajun Kitchen, Bully’s, Black Knight Tavern & Grill, and the Wrightsville Inn. For the designated drivers in attendance or those just looking for an alternative, Turkey Hill also will be providing plenty of nonalcoholic drinks!

Just opened, Columbia Kettle Works is excited to be a part of Hops ‘n’ Clocks and a part of the growing Columbia business community. “At our small micro-brewery and brewpub partner/brewer, Rod Smith, works with our five
barrel brewing system to supply a variety of beers, including four taps of recurring traditional styles plus four or more taps pouring a wide range of great tasting alternative brews. We look forward to meeting all the attending craft beer enthusiasts at Hops ‘n’ Clocks and serving up some tasty beers,” shares Columbia Kettle Works owner/business manager, Bill Collister.

Live music by the energetic and popular Irish trio of Fire in the Glen returns with a rollicking selection of traditional music from Ireland, Scotland, and the Canadian Maritimes, including blistering fiddle tunes, mug-thumping pub songs, and soulful airs and touching ballads … and some unusual twists as well! The trio features Amanda Wells on vocals, guitar, harmonica, and percussion; Durelle Leaman on guitar and vocals; and Tom Knapp on fiddle, bodhran, and backing vocals.

“The People’s Choice” will be awarded at the conclusion of the evening after everyone has visited all the breweries and restaurants and voted by ballot for his or her favorite!

A limited number of tickets will be sold. Tickets are $30 and $15 for designated drivers. Attendees must be 21 or older and IDs will be checked at the door. The ticket price includes beer tasting, food sampling, a commemorative glass, Museum admission, live music, and even a chance to win a door prize! Proceeds benefit the National Watch & Clock Museum, Library & Research Center.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

COLUMBIA, PA: Who doesn’t like a little magic? Clockmakers are no different, so they developed a style of clock commonly known as the “mystery clock.”
The Magic of Mystery Clocks opens at the National Watch and Clock Museum Saturday, May 3. A mystery clock has no visible means of connecting a movement to the hands marking the time - a horological magic trick. Some of the most famous mystery clocks are believed to have been inspired and built by famous French magician and clockmaker Jean Eugène Robert-Houdin. The famous illusionist Harry Houdini is believed to have actually taken his stage name from the magician/clockmaker!

After viewing these mysterious clocks from 12 to 1, admission-paying visitors to the Museum are invited to enjoy popcorn and punch and a magic show with local magician, Eric Vera, at 1:00 in the Museum’s theater.

The Magic of Mystery Clocks will be on display through December.

NIGHT AT THE MUSEUM

COLUMBIA, PA: What happens after the National Watch and Clock Museum locks its doors each night? Does the mouse run up the clock, does the grandfather clock begin to talk, or does time really fly?

It’s easy to take the watches and clocks in your home or office for granted. With a quick glance, there’s the time telling you whether it’s time to head to work, get lunch, pick up the kids, or go to bed.

March 28 is the next sleepover. Cost is $20 for children and $12 for adults, with payment due prior to the sleepover. The adult chaperone must be at least 21 years old and is required for every five children participating.

FOR VISITORS’ EYES ONLY
A JAMES BOND WATCH EXHIBIT: A 50-YEAR HISTORY THROUGH 2014

COLUMBIA, PA: History-making wristwatches of James Bond have returned to the National Watch & Clock Museum in a special exhibit now open and running through the end of 2014. Dell Deaton, author-creator of the James Bond Watches websites and social media outlets, is exhibit curator.
This James Bond Watch Exhibit inaugurates a newly, dedicated Wristwatch Gallery on the main floor of the Museum. Special displays will change every 12-18 months in the future.

"'James Bond' was an obvious way to introduce our Wristwatches Gallery as a whole," said Noel Poirier, Museum Director. "Our past Bond watch presentations have been quite popular, and we regularly get requests for more on James Bond's watches."It's a theme that provides both a hook and a solid way to organize highlights from five decades of watchmaking. Over the course of a little over 50 years, starting with the waning of Gruen as it stood among watchmakers in the late-1950s, through present-day Omega with its proprietary co-axial technology, 'Bond' gives us a unique means to periodically check in on developments through the 1960s, the quartz revolution, and premium-brand preferences of today. Ian Fleming and the James Bond movie history mark some of the most significant changes in style, power supplies, and our very definition of what a wristwatch can and should do."

Key to the selection of over a dozen unique timekeepers for display was a desire to show range, and even surprise visitors in some instances.

"Over the years, James Bond watch choices have played an important role in defining the character 'himself,'" notes Dell Deaton, exhibit curator. "Some watches convey sophistication, some show an agent equipped by Western Super-Powers with the very latest and greatest - even before the addition of Q-Branch gadgetry. We have mission-specific watches here, and others that seamlessly accompany Agent 007 from casino to combat without compromise."

The National Watch & Clock Museum is also proud to announce that this 2014 James Bond Watch Display features two original wristwatches worn by Bond.
The first, on special loan from the family and estate, is "the first literary James Bond watch," the personal watch of 007-creator Ian Fleming and his reference for the Rolex Explorer that he wrote onto James Bond's wrist in the 1963 On Her Majesty's Secret Service. Second, this display shows the Breitling for Bentley worn by Jeffery Deaver during his book promotion for Carte Blanche in 2011, "the watch" specified in that novel for Bond's undercover disguise in Africa.
"Anchoring the exhibit with Ian Fleming's vision of 'the James Bond watch' obviously invites comparison and debate in terms of choices we show people that have followed," adds Deaton.

"This is the first time ever, anywhere, that all (now seven) confirmed James Bond watchmakers have been displayed together: Breitling, Gruen, Hamilton (Pulsar), Omega, Rolex, Seiko, and TAG Heuer - with screen-accurate models from Dr. No in 1962 and Skyfall in 2012. We don't pick favorites, of course. But I suspect that many visitors will try to, and that's fine. Engaging thought and passion is fundamentally what this show is all about."

An added thrill for visitors is a dedicated micro-site, accessible by most Smartphones via QR Code scan. Optimized for mobile screen sizes and connection speeds, the key feature of this App allows visitors to watch specially produced videos on each watch, running, and performing in many of the elements for which it was designed - James Bond style!

Once linked, visitors will enjoy ongoing access to the micro-site, from any location where they have an Internet connection. But the exact URL is being reserved "For Visitors' Eyes Only" throughout run of this exhibit.

Dell Deaton is an internationally recognized expert in Ian Fleming and James Bond watches. Among his original research and credited discoveries, he was first to document the real-world basis for the literary James Bond watch; all wristwatch models supplied by Seiko UK to the movies; and both TAG Heuer watches worn by the 007 character in The Living Daylights, among other achievements. Most recently, Dell Deaton identified the Gruen Precision wristwatch worn by Sean Connery as the very first movie-Bond watch in Dr. No, and in another four movies following.

And watches and clocks, and clocks and snacks! If you knew Time like I do, he does what you ask. Just whisper a hint and round goes the clock! It's Tea Time again! Fantabulous shock!"

All guests are encouraged to dress in their fancy and finest attire for this special occasion and bring their cameras to capture all the special moments. The tea includes assorted sweets, scones with jam, and tea or hot chocolate. Children age four and up are invited to attend the tea accompanied by an adult. GOT TIME ON YOUR HANDS? CHECK OUT THE NEW WORKSHOPS FOR 2014!

COLUMBIA, PA: New clock and watch repair workshops are now available! Start the new year with great opportunities to learn new skills or build on those you already have.

John Reardon, author of Patek Philippe in America and a regular Hodinkee.com columnist wrote, “Not too long ago, I had the opportunity to attend a two-day ‘Servicing a Pocket Watch for the Beginner’ workshop at the NAWCC in Columbia, PA. After experiencing this class firsthand, I recommend this watchmaking experience to anyone interested in learning more about how their watches work and appreciating the incredible talent that watchmakers have in keeping a vintage or modern timepiece properly preserved and in good running order. For the watch enthusiast, this is about as good as it gets for a horological getaway.”
Check out www.nawcc.org for the latest workshop schedule where new offerings are regularly added. Anyone who signs up early receives the early bird registration discount.
